Data Transfer Time Calculator

Calculate transfer time from data size, link bandwidth and effective throughput. GB / GiB, bit / Byte and theoretical / effective values are shown explicitly so you can compare link options side by side.

How long the transfer takes, from data size and link bandwidth.

Shared input

Unit

Changing the unit does not convert the number you typed (5 GB becomes 5 GiB). The interpretation changes, so the result changes too.

Before you rely on these numbers

  • The bandwidth and efficiency presets are rough guides and do not guarantee performance. Effective throughput depends heavily on the path, equipment and protocol.
  • Effective bandwidth = theoretical bandwidth × efficiency. A 1 Gbps link does not deliver 1 Gbps. The required-bandwidth mode returns the theoretical bandwidth you should contract, with efficiency already factored in.
  • GB (decimal, powers of 1000) and GiB (binary, powers of 1024) differ by about 7.4%. bps is bit/second while B/s is Byte/second — a factor of 8.
  • All results are rounded to 4 significant digits. Theoretical throughput from RTT and window size, and per-protocol characteristics, are not modelled.
